Hugo: The Magic Journey or The Magic Journey is a 1998 video game developed and published by ITE for the PC in the "Play and Learn" series. It was titled Den Magiske Rejse / Hugo: Leg Og Lær 2 in Denmark, Cesta kolem světa (Around the world) in Czechia, Fantastische Welt in Germany, Hugo Taikamatka in Finland, Magiczna podróż in Poland, and Кузя и его друзья: Большое путешествие (Kuzya/Hugo and his friends: A great trip) in Russia.
The game was re-released in the compilations Hugo 2 in 1 (Hugo - Sonderpaket 2 in Germany) together with Wild River in 1999 and in the Best of Hugo series along with Hugo Classic #2 (Hugo 4) in 2007. In Poland, it was also standalone re-released as one of the ten games in the 2006 Hugo Złota 10-tka series.
Plot[]
One night, Hugo's daughter Rut is roused by strange noises. The noise comes from the attic and so Rut sets out to check. The girl makes her way there and finds a dusty captain's log. Curious, Rut opens the book and discovers an old bookworm named Geo, who tells her the story of her great-grandfather who was a pirate captain, and of a treasure chest that they found but which was then was lost after his ship was sunk and the crew dispersed by a tornado sent by the evil witch Scylla.
To open the chest, Rut will need three magic keys. And so Rut packs her bags and goes on a great voyage in a search for them, exploring a fantastic world with more than 20 locations and having many adventures.
Gameplay[]
- Flag Painting: Painting national flags correctly.
- Bottle Letters: Bottles with letters float in a river. Rut's job is to fish them out of the small river and put them in the right mailbag before a crocodile can get to them.
- Airport: Rut has to help out in an airport. The pilots tell her a city and Rut has to tell the pilot which country to fly to. (This scenario also appears in Hugo Krypton.)
- Memory (Geography): Here Rut has to turn the cards around to see which pictures look the same as the other one, until all cards are paired and gone.
- Music Cafe: Hugo's daughter has put together a band of musicians from all over the world. Now she will have to pick out three musicians to re-enact a song that should sound exactly like the original song. (This scenario also appears in Hugo Titan.)
- Tomato Throwing: In this game Rut will have to shoot animals that do not fit the with tomatoes. There are 10 tomatoes in the Easy mode and only 5 tomatoes in the Hard mode.
- Crime Hunt: A jewelry store was broken into, but the culprit has forgotten something. With this information, Rut goes on a hunt. She needs to determine the exact location to arrest the offender.
- World Map: Three things are displayed for a country. Rut will have to say which things do not suit this country.
